Welcome butterflies and songbirds to your garden with Venus False Sunflowers. Nothing captures the long, warm days of summer like these double bloomed daisy-like flowers, with their sunshiny yellow petals and dark yellow centres. Radiant 3- to 5-inch blossoms appear from midsummer through the early autumn growing season. These charming plants are native to North America and are undemanding and drought-resistant.
Hardy in zones 3 to 9, these perennials grow well in full or half sun. Ready to plant in the spring, we recommend that you place the plants 24 to 30 inches apart and 3 inches deep. Heliopsis helianthoides, also known as false sunflowers or smooth ox-eye sunflowers, are not fussy. They grow in any well-drained clay, sandy or loamy soil and reach an impressive 30 to 36 inches in height.
Because of their long blooming season, Heliopsis 'false sunflowers' are a wonderful addition to your native wildflower garden. Consider pairing them with other native plants, such as multi-blossomed phlox or ruby red columbine for a naturalized look. Add them to the backs of borders, where their height provides a lovely counterpoint to low-growing bloomers. They make excellent cut flowers for indoor arrangements as well. Illuminate your garden with the delightful sunlit look of Venus False Sunflower plants.
