Lavender Mountain Lilies (Ixiolirion tataricum) please the eye from late spring to early summer, and their delicate fragrance delights the nose as well. Clusters of tiny, funnel shaped flowers set amongst slender, grey-green leaves add a vivid dash of violet-blue to your garden or borders. A lovely swath of colour from a distance, they are also exceptionally pretty when viewed up close, with narrow stripes of dark violet streaked through lavender petals.
For a beautiful spring display, plant lavender mountain lilies in the fall, about 3 inches deep and 2 to 3 inches apart. They thrive in clay, loamy or sandy soils; the key is to provide adequate drainage. They love full sunshine, but do well in part-shade to shady areas as well. Don't let the dainty appearance of these easy-to-grow perennials fool you: they thrive in a variety of climates from zones 3 to 9 and, once planted, require no staking and very little maintenance.
Lavender mountain lilies are lovely in formal gardens, rock gardens and along pathways. Standing 12 to 15 inches tall, these diminutive Asian lilies pack a punch when planted in drifts, providing fields of long lasting blooms with an intoxicating scent. Intersperse them with taller lily varieties for a wild, exotic look. Feature the beauty and fragrance of lavender mountain lilies in your springtime bouquets.
