Appropriately named, Drama Queen Irises show off their bold shape with rich, eye-catching colours. As if the heavily frilled, lightly picotee upright crimson-plum standards tipped in gold weren't enough, these drama queens present intense gold veining on the open, deep crimson falls for a flower that demands your attention. Blooming in mid to late spring, these elegant reddish-purple and gold irises liven up your garden with their 38-inch height.

Hardy in zones 4 through 9, Drama Queen irises (Iris germanica) are not the high maintenance beauties that their name suggests. In fact, they need little care. Plant your rhizomes in mid to late summer, burying them about 1 inch below the level of the soil and spacing them 12 to 24 inches apart. These irises tolerate a wide range of soils, including clay, loam and sand, but prefer a well-drained location. Equally happy in full sun or partial shade, these perennial divas will deign to grace your garden for years to come.

Make these Drama Queen irises the star of the show, or have them share the stage with complementary companions like bleeding heart and columbine. Surround your star with an audience of low-growing companions like single late tulips and pansies along fence lines and foundations. Get ready for the accolades that come with these attention-seeking irises.
