Add fun and brightness to your garden with the charming Candycane Sorrel for mid to late summer colour. The botanical name, Oxalis versicolor, means to change colour, and that is what this cheery plant does. The buds are closed when it's dark or cool outside and appear white with bright red swirls, reminiscent of a garden of candy canes. When the blossoms warm from the sun and the buds open, they show off their spiraled red-tinged white blooms.

Oxalis versicolor bulbs are hardy in zones 7 through 9. These Dutch-sourced perennials require a full or half day of sunshine and should be planted in well-drained clay, sandy or loamy soil to perform best. We recommend that you place the bulbs 4 inches deep and 3 to 4 inches apart. Candycane sorrel grows 6 to 12 inches high and spreads 6 to 12 inches.

Candycane sorrel looks wonderful as a border planting, in alpine or rock gardens or when used to naturalize. Planting oxalis bulbs in a window box or planter makes a stunning display. Lilies, dahlias, Dutch iris and begonias make romantic and charming companion plantings in the background to make your garden really pop. Add extra dazzle to your garden's colour display with Candycane sorrel for an endearing touch of magic.

Delicate and airy candy cane-coloured blooms cover this sweet plant. Each 1 to 1½" flower will open when warmed by the sun and show off five petals. White flowers, tinged with red, sway above the clover-like mound of leaves. They naturalize readily and are the perfect choice as a ground cover or in rock or alpine gardens. Oxalis versicolor
