Fragrant and charming, a Blue Grape Hyacinth is a lovely addition to your landscape. These delightful purple to blue bell-shaped flowers produce a mass of blooms atop the spike in a grape-like cluster. Hardy and carefree, these Dutch bulbs naturalize easily and return to grace your garden year after year. Enjoy their sweet scent and dainty appearance when they bloom en masse in mid-spring.
Grape hyacinths are so easy to grow that they can literally be neglected after planting--they don't need any feeding, they're pest resistant, and they get plenty of water from natural rainfall. Hardy in zones 4 to 9, they fare equally well in sun or partial shade. Plant your grape hyacinth bulbs in the early fall in well-drained soil. Place them about 3 inches deep and 2 to 3 inches apart in clusters. Standing 6 to 8 inches tall, these flowers produce grassy foliage in the fall.
Because grape hyacinth bulbs need so little attention, they are perfect for woodland and cottage gardens. Place them in borders or beds with taller spring-blooming bulbs like iris, or use them as a ground cover. Indoors, they can be forced to bloom in winter. Add a few Blue Grape Hyacinth bulbs to spring container gardens with pansies and daffodils for a welcoming porch.
