When planting spring bulbs, it's a good idea to plan ahead. Many of our Dutch spring bulbs should planted in the fall, so consider the area in which you'll be planting. Early spring bulbs generally prefer full sun, well-drained sandy or loamy soil, and some soil dressing. Spring bulbs will typically thrive during their first year regardless of soil conditions, because the bulbs provide nutrients, but perennials may require feeding. Many of our early spring bulbs are hardy in zones 4 to 9, but be sure check the planting instructions for individual types.

It's certainly easy to begin planting a garden in the springtime, but planning ahead can allow you to take the time to fully explore your options. By planting spring blooming bulbs in the fall, you allow yourself the freedom to make considered creative choices. Take the opportunity to decide if you'd prefer wide swaths of certain colours, or small islands of mixed blooms. Consider whether you'd like a gradient of pastel hues or an explosion of riotous colour. Fall planting also lets you plan a smooth transition from one season to the next.

To create a garden that dazzles all season long, plant a variety of flowers with varying bloom times. Start with early spring bloomers like aconite and snow glories. Other spring bulbs like triteleia and lilies will bloom in mid to late spring. Gladiolus and allium provide gorgeous colour all season long, and colchicum bloom in the fall. Create a unique garden with our spring flowering bulbs.
